Isaac D’Israeli (1766-1848), British writer, scholar, man of letters, and father of Benjamin Disraeli, first earl of Beaconsfield (1804-1881), descended from a Jewish family which, having been driven by the Inquisition from Spain towards the end of the 15th century, had emigrated from Cento in Italy to England in 1748. His father sent him to live with his agent at Amsterdam, where he worked under a tutor for four or five years. There he studied Bayle and Voltaire, and became an ardent disciple of Rousseau. He became one the noted bibliophiles of the time. His most popular work was a collection of essays entitled “Curiosities of Literature”. These essays contain a myriad of anecdotes about historical persons and events, unusual books, and the habits of book-collectors.
¶ The “Curiosities of Literature” are “a miscellany of literary and historical anecdotes, of original critical remarks, and of interesting and curious information of all kinds, animated by genuine literary feeling, taste and enthusiasm” (Encyclopædia Britannica, 1911).

Minor rubbing to corners, else very fine.

Zweite Ausgabe. Drei hellbraune Halbmaroquinbände mit breiten Maroquinecken; die Rücken mit fünf erhabenen Bünden, auf zweitem und viertem Feld jeweils die goldgeprägte Titelei sowie die Bandzahl, die anderen mit ornamentaler Vergoldung, unten das Jahr. Die Deckel mit braunem Wolkenmarmor bezogen, Kopfgoldschnitt, handgestochene grün/hellbraune Seidenkapitale, Vorsätze aus hellem Marmorpapier. Signiert jeweils auf dem vorderen fliegenden Vorsatz verso oben: „Bayntun. Binder. Bath. Eng.“. Ecken minimal berieben, sonst sehr gut erhalten. Wunderschöne, äußerst dekorative Einbände.

Handgefertigte Halblederbände der Zeit mit breiten Rücken und Ecken aus violett-blauem Oasenziegenleder, fünf erhabenen Bünden auf den Rücken, auf den Feldern goldgeprägte Rahmen, auf zweitem und drittem Feld jeweils Titelei und Bandzahl, die anderen mit einem weiteren Rahmen vergoldet. Auf den Deckeln hellblaues Leinen, Vorsätze aus hellem Marmorpapier, handgestochene Kapitale aus weißer und blauer Seide, Kopfgoldschnitt, vorn und unten kaum beschnitten. Signiert auf den vorderen fliegenden Vorsätzen verso unten: „Bayntun. Binder. Bath. Eng.“ für oben: „Brentano. New York“.
 

Wohlgedruckte Ausgabe. Die Erstausgaben der Essays erschienen 1841 und 1844. Er war vom Neuplatonismus, der indischen Philosophie und dem deutschen Idealismus beeinflußt.

Fast neuwertige, sehr dekorative Einbände.
